Justice for Rohith Vemula – ‘Yalgaar’ Performs A Song in Massive Mumbai Rally

Published on Feb 1, 2016

Yalgaar is one of the many musical groups who work with the masses of Maharashtra on issues concerning them. They perform specially in poor Dalit hamlets. Here the members of the group sing while they walk in a rally for Rohith Vemula.

Nearly five thousand people gathered and marched from Byculla to CST on February 1, 2016 to protest against the central governments handling of the protests after the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula. Participating in the rally were dozens of Dalit organisations from Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra, one delegation from Hyderabad, activists and civil society, besides political parties like Aam Aadmi Party and Communist Party of India.

The protest rally was led by Dr. B R Ambedkar’s grandson – Prakash Ambedkar. The protest went off peacefully and the Mumbai Police behaved well considering what their counterparts in Delhi did to a similar protest there. Prakash Ambedkar promised more rallies in the future if justice is not served in the case of Rohith Vemula.
